What is The Perrin Technique?

The Perrin Technique is a manual system of diagnosis and treatment that has helped many hundreds of patients with CFS/ME/ Fibromyalgia since 1989 and more recently those suffering from Long Covid too. I am a Licenced Perrin Practitioner and was trained by Dr Perrin himself in the pathology, applied anatomy, physiology and methods of diagnosing and treating CFS/ME/Fibromyalgia/Long Covid developed through over 35 years of clinical research, and through successfully treating hundreds of grateful patients.

Has it been tested?

Yes! Its effectiveness was tested using two separate clinical trials. The first examined the change in the symptoms following a year of treatment. The second repeated the first study and used MRI scanning in order to examine further the possible mechanisms of the improvement.

What’s the science behind the technique?

Raymond Perrin’s research at the University of Salford in conjunction with the University of Manchester, coupled with the hundreds of successful clinical case studies and the latest findings in neurophysiology, has provided strong evidence that CFS/ME involves a disturbance of the drainage of toxins from the brain and muscles. These poisons often enter the body in the form of viruses, bacteria and other microbes, parasitic infection or due to environmental toxins such as pesticides. Fibromyalgia and Long Covid affect the body in a similar way.

However the overproduction of chemicals naturally produced within the body to help the immune system with fighting infections, inflammation and stress. Constant physical and emotional stress can lead to this type of overproduction. The excess of some toxins in the brain and spinal cord should be removed via the Glymphatic system to drain out into lymph vessels and be broken down by the body’s lymphatic system and liver. Those suffering from CFS/ME/Fibromyalgia and Long Covid have a reversed drainage that leads to toxins building up in the central nervous system causing the dysfunction of different parts of the brain and spinal cord. This explains the many different symptoms felt.

What happens in the initial consultation?

You will first fill out a questionnaire detailing your main medical history. You will then have a comprehensive consultation which should last a total of about 90 minutes. During the session, I will spend time explaining CFS/ME/ Fibromyalgia/ Long Covid and the reasons for the technique plus take a detailed medical case history. This will be followed by an examination of your spine, abdomen, head and the lymphatics of the thorax which includes the breast tissue (please feel free to bring a chaperone to attend the initial consultation with you). In the case of a diagnosis, the patient will be given a score out of 10, with 10/10 being perfectly healthy.

If following the initial consultation you wish to receive treatment following The Perrin Technique protocols a course of appointments will be agreed, once a week for 12 weeks as well as an agreement for a self care and home routine to be followed daily. At the end of the 12 weeks we will reassess your Perrin Score and discuss how we proceed from there. As the symptom picture improves, there should be a gradual increase in the time between the consultations.

It is not a quick process and your commitment to follow the programme is essential if it is to succeed. An example treatment schedule for a client starting at a Perrin Score of 5/10 might be: Ave:

  • Week 1-12 weekly

  • Week 13-24 every 2 weeks

  • Week 25-36 every 3 weeks

  • Week 36- 52 every 4 weeks

  • Month 12-18 every 3 months

  • Month 24 final check-up

At the first of the 12 appointments I will give advice and show you how to follow a self care at home routine and give guidance re side effects and supplements advised by Dr Perrin.

What happens in the treatment sessions?

The treatment aims at manually stimulating the drainage of the offending toxins from the central nervous system with gentle stroking towards both collar bones where the lymph drains into larger veins eventually reaching the liver. Here, the poisons are finally rendered harmless. Gentle manual treatment to the cranium and spine with relaxation of the surrounding muscles together with specific lymphatic drainage techniques eventually improve the health and function of the body as a whole.

A testimonial from one of my Perrin Technique clients

Engaging Caroline for Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage (MLD) and The Perrin Technique (TPT) was a real turning point in my recovery from long covid. I began treatment as I was emerging from a particularly difficult period and the initial 12-week course of sessions helped me get – quite literally – back on my feet after around 18 months of being largely bedbound. I am now about 8 months in and continuing to see the benefits snowball. My fatigue, pain, nausea and headaches have all slowly reduced and I’ve been able to start reintroducing the activities that I love. I’ll be forever grateful to Caroline for the integral part she has played in my healing journey.

Caroline is incredibly knowledgeable in her field. Her wisdom and expertise impressed me from the get-go and really made me feel like I was in safe hands and being well-looked after. Each treatment has been specifically tailored to address my (often ever-changing) symptom profile and my sessions have comprised a comprehensive blend of Myofascial Release Therapy and CranioSacral Therapy as well as MLD and TPT. What’s more, Caroline’s insight really extends beyond the massage table. Throughout my recovery she has offered additional advice and support with regards to such things as lifestyle measures, physiotherapy, pain relief and pacing, all of which have been invaluable. She has called upon her extensive network of other healthcare professionals to help answer my queries where needed, including reaching out to an acupuncturist, a functional medicine practitioner and even Dr Perrin himself. She takes a truly holistic approach to healing and this has been reflected in my recovery as so many aspects of my health and wellbeing have improved.

The best thing(s) about Caroline? She’s so, incredibly generous with her time and expertise and really goes the extra mile (and beyond!) to support you in all aspects of your healing journey. She is very warm and approachable and makes you feel completely safe and at ease in her care. Her passion for her work is truly palpable and it’s been a complete joy to work with her.

P.S. Did I mention that her treatments are the most relaxing thing EVER?
